Work and Education:
Dr. Lana Amy Giles is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) teaching in the online DNP Nurse-Midwife track. She has taught undergraduate and graduate students at several universities prior to teaching at Baylor. She has precepted student nurse-midwives at her clinical site for over 15 years. Her expertise in midwifery include owning a free-standing birth center and a hospital-based practice. She brings her experiences as a leader, manager, clinician, and business owner to the role of teaching future midwives.
Committees:
Dr. Giles is serving on the Graduate Studies Committee at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. Dr. Giles is also very active in her professional organizations. She served as the Secretary and Legislative Representative for the Consortium of Texas Certified Nurse-Midwives. She currently serves on the Program Committee for the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
Articles and Presentations:
Outside the classroom, Dr. Giles is committed to improving women’s quality of care. In 2019, she participated in the Texas EMS, Trauma and Acute Care Foundation: Perinatal Quality Improvement conference with a poster presentation, “Low-Dose Aspirin and Preeclampsia Prevention.” In 2020, Dr. Giles delivered a presentation via virtual conference for the American College of Nurse-Midwives entitled “Implementation of Preeclampsia Prevention Guidelines in a Birth Center Setting.” Later that year, her article “Implementing Screening Guidelines for Preeclampsia Prevention in a Birth Center: A Quality Improvement Project” was published in the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing.
Community:
Dr. Giles enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. Exercise is her relaxation and service. She raises money for different organizations by running or cycling in races. She volunteers at her daughter’s school for band events. She also serves the Texas Maternal Mortality Task Force by abstracting cases of maternal mortality and presenting those cases to the Task Force members.
