Dr. Angelina (Lina) Nguyen is an Assistant Professor at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (BULHSON). She uses a variety of strategies to teach her students in the classroom, online, lab, and clinical settings. She is currently the lead faculty for NUR 3330 Introduction to Principles of Nursing Practice in the Distance Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (DABSN) track. She is also a founding faculty advisor for the Multicultural Student Nurses’ Association (MSNA).
Research:
Dr. Nguyen’s research program centers around health promotion in underserved populations, with a focus on prevention and self-management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Vietnamese Americans. She is one of the few nurse scientists in the U.S. who studies the health of Vietnamese Americans. T2DM is a preventable and potentially crippling chronic disease that affects Asian Americans at higher prevalence rates when compared with non-Hispanic whites. The health concern exists in this population despite having a lower average body mass index. Her dissertation research, “Risk Perception of Developing Diabetes in Vietnamese Americans with Prediabetes,” utilized a mixed method design to study the cognitive and affective dimensions of perceived risk for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in Vietnamese Americans with prediabetes. She was the first researcher who has explored this concept among Vietnamese Americans (VnAs).
Dr. Nguyen’s recent work includes translation and validation of surveys measuring perceived diabetes risk and spirituality for VnAs. She was the first primary investigator to analyze data collected by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services for the national Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to identify the social determinants of cardiometabolic and mental health in the Asian Americans in Texas. She is currently working with her research mentor, Dr. Miyong Kim, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAHA at University of Texas, Austin with plans to design culturally tailored interventions for the prevention and management of T2DM in VnAs through consideration of psychosocial phenotyping.
