Kate chose Baylor’s Distance ABSN program because she wanted a career that offers long-term growth and fulfillment.
Can you tell us about your professional and educational background before joining Baylor’s ABSN program?
My professional background is quite diverse. I’ve worked as an equity analyst, a ski instructor, a receptionist, and a secretary. I’ve done a little bit of everything. My career path has been a little all over the place because I struggled to find the right fit.
What inspired you to become a nurse? Do you have a personal story to share?
There were many factors that inspired me to pursue nursing, but my own medical problems [played] a role. I had a spinal fusion when I was younger, and during that challenging time, the nurses made such a huge impact on me. They were the ones who spent the most time with me, showed genuine care, and made sure I was well cared for. That experience motivated me to want to be a nurse. I love caring for people and helping them feel better, and nursing offers the perfect opportunity to give back. It’s such a wonderful and rewarding profession with a million reasons to be passionate about it. I could talk about it all day!
Why was now the right time for you to make a career change and pursue an ABSN?
There were several reasons I decided to make a career change and pursue a Distance Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As I approach my thirties, I want a career that offers long-term growth and fulfillment, something where I could advance and not feel stuck doing the same thing. My previous jobs were fun but didn’t feel sustainable for the future. Nursing, on the other hand, provides endless opportunities for growth.
Why did you choose Baylor’s ABSN program? How did you hear about it, and what appealed to you most?
I chose Baylor’s nursing program for several reasons. I actually spent a year of my undergraduate studies at Baylor, so I already knew how incredible the faculty, staff, and students are. Everyone at Baylor is so kind, caring, and wants you to succeed. That support with the high-quality education Baylor offers, made it an easy decision for me.
How has your experience been during the on-campus immersion? What was it like to meet your professors and peers in person?
The on-campus immersion has been wonderful. Meeting my professors and peers in person has reinforced the sense of teamwork and support that Baylor fosters. The faculty, staff, and students are all so caring, kind, and compassionate. The professors genuinely want you to succeed. Even when you struggle with a skill, they work with you to help you improve, so that you’re prepared for real-world nursing.
Can you share your experience working with your student success coach to secure a clinical site and preceptor?
One thing I love is the placement staff, they care about you. They juggle so many students and still manage to ensure you get everything done and make sure you have everything you need, so your education can keep moving forward. Developing relationships with the staff has been helpful for clinical placements.
Why should others consider nursing as a second career?
Nursing is such a wonderful field to be in, especially for those considering a second career. It provides financial stability there is always room for growth and specialization. Whether you want to work at the bedside, move into administration, pursue education, or become a nurse practitioner, there’s always a path forward.
What kind of impact do you hope to have as a nurse?
As a nurse, I hope to improve people’s lives. Even little things, like helping someone stay calm during a stressful moment, can help. Beyond that, I hope to educate people about their health and improve their lives that way. Nurses have the opportunity to show compassion, kindness, and empathy and that’s something I hope to bring into every interaction. It’s very rewarding to know you’re helping others while also growing personally.
