Work and Education:
Dr. Shepherd is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON). She primarily teaches didactic, clinical, and DNP project courses within the DNP FNP program, however she also teaches pre-nursing students on the Waco campus.
Dr. Shepherd is a Family Nurse Practitioner, specializing in preventative medicine. However, she had the pleasure to sub-specialize in lung cancer screening, pulmonary nodule management, and tobacco cessation treatment and counseling. While working in this sub-specialty she was instrumental in creating a robust lung cancer screening program in Washington, DC and quickly became known as a national lung cancer screening expert, presenting at national conferences. As an RN, Dr. Shepherd has many years of experience in critical care nursing.
Committees:
Dr. Shepherd serves on the Graduate Studies/DNP Program Committee, Educational Technology Committee, DNP Project Committee, and DNP Day of Presentation Task Force at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. In addition, Dr. Shepherd serves on the Lung Cancer Screening Disparities Advisory Board in conjunction with MedStar Health and Georgetown University. She also served on the Lung Cancer Screening 2.0 Steering Committee with the American College of Radiology.
She is a member of American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), National League for Nursing (NLN), American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), and the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer.
Articles and Presentations:
Outside the classroom, Dr. Shepherd contributes to the nursing profession by conducting scholarly activities and disseminating the knowledge via professional conferences. To name a few, she is a key contributor to the presentation, “Developing Provider Education to Address Barriers and Reduce Disparities in Lung Cancer Screening and Smoking Cessation Treatment Among Underserved Patients,” an abstract recently submitted for the American Association for Cancer Research’s (AACR) Disparities Conference. She was an oral presenter of “Implementation of Referral Pathways for Incidental Findings: A Route to Screening Program Enhancement” at the GO2 Foundation National Lung Cancer Screening Conference, and she presented a poster at the MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center titled “Human Immunodeficiency Virus Patient Educational Handout Intervention: An Evidence-Based Translation”.
Community:
Finally, Andrea Shepherd is involved in her local community. Aside from spending time with her husband, daughter, and fur baby, she is active at Mosaic Waco. She also volunteers with local organizations mentoring the underprivileged youth and provides volunteer medical services whenever she can. As her husband works for Baylor Athletics, you can find her at any Baylor sporting event with her family cheering on the Baylor Bears. She also enjoys being outdoors and travelling the world.
