Work and Education:
Dr. Amy Anderson is a Clinical Associate Professor teaching in graduate nursing at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON). With more than 20 years in academia, Dr. Anderson has expertise in multiple teaching modalities and course delivery methods. Prior to teaching at Baylor University, Dr. Anderson held distinguished positions in academia and health policy including: Visiting Fellow in health policy at The Heritage Foundation, Associate Professor of Professional Practice and Program Coordinator for the Post-Master’s DNP Program at Texas Christian University, Assistant Professor and Health Policy Theme Lead in the School of Medicine at Texas Christian University, Associate Professor in the DNP Program at Indiana Wesleyan University, Graduate Health Policy Fellow at The Heritage Foundation, Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas- Little Rock, and Assistant Professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing. Dr. Anderson currently teaches courses focused on health policy and leadership. She holds a DNP in Executive Leadership from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, is a Certified Nurse Educator and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
Professional Organizations, Notable Work and Honors:
Dr. Amy Anderson is a public advisor for the Paragon Health Institute, a health policy think tank working on national solutions to health care reform. Dr. Anderson was selected for the Global Nursing and Health Expert Panel at the American Academy of Nursing. She is a former International Council of Nursing (ICN) Global Nurse Leadership Institute Policy Program scholar and a member of the PAHO region GNLI alumni table. As a founder of Global Nurse Consultants Alliance (GNCA), she mentors and coaches global nurse leaders from organizations such as Médecins San Frontières (MSF). Dr. Anderson was appointed to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Faculty Policy Think Tank helping develop recommendations for the AACN Board of Directors on how to advance health policy education in nursing. Dr. Anderson was appointed to the Texas Nurses Association Government Affairs Committee in 2018 and continues to serve in this role.
As a Visiting Fellow at The Heritage Foundation, Dr. Anderson researched and analyzed state and national policies affecting millions of Americans proposing solutions for complex problems in healthcare delivery and public health. Dr. Anderson served as expert counsel to the National Coronavirus Recovery Commission on COVID-19. Dr. Anderson was an inaugural member of the Global Think Tank Townhall convened by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program of the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania where she worked on global policy solutions to the pandemic crisis with international policy colleagues. Her policy work has focused on analyzing the impact of healthcare reform on the healthcare workforce, proposing policy solutions that improve patient access to quality healthcare, protecting the right of conscience of health professionals, and achieving a public health strategy that balances protecting lives and livelihoods.
Dr. Anderson’s policy consulting work has resulted in wins on full practice authority for APRNs. Her most notable work was in West Virginia where she consulted for AARP on House Bill 4334 which passed in 2016 and served as a case study for messaging and strategy for success in other states.
Publications and Presentations:
Dr. Amy Anderson has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on health policy, nursing education, and leadership. Her white papers/backgrounders and op-eds have been featured at The Heritage Foundation, Fox Business, The Daily Signal, Real Clear Health, The Washington Times, The National Interest, Washington Examiner, Newsday, and the Tribune wire. She has been a guest medical expert on local and national radio and international news.
Dr. Anderson has authored chapters in leading health policy texts for nurses including Policy & Politics in Nursing and Healthcare (8th ed.) and Health Policy and Politics A Nurse’s Guide (7th ed.). She was the keynote speaker for the 2019 Texas Nurses Association Health Policy Summit and presented in Barcelona, Spain at the ICN Congress. Dr. Anderson led policy workshops with the Center to Champion Nursing at AARP and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) where she facilitated the design of policy messaging and political strategies that have resulted in state legislative wins impacting nursing practice, full practice authority, and patient access across the US.
Community:
Dr. Anderson has led study abroad and mission trips to Geneva, London, and China. She has served on various academic committees over the years and was the Chair of the Outcomes and Evaluation Committee at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing. Dr. Anderson was on the Board of Prevent Blindness-Texas. She is a Peer Reviewer for the American Journal of Nursing and has served as an Abstract Reviewer for ICN and a Scholarship Reviewer for AACN. Dr. Anderson has shared her expertise through community presentations on public health issues. She and her husband, Christopher, have four children and work with the college ministry at their local church.
