Work and Education:

Dr. Alona Angosta is a tenured Professor and Associate Dean for Research & Scholarship at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON). She received her Doctor of Philosophy degree from The University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Research:

Dr. Angosta’s research interests include cardiovascular disease (CVD), lifestyle interventions, and advancing health equity. She is recognized for her work in exploring CVD risk factors and lifestyle interventions to prevent heart disease among Filipinos in the U.S. She has secured external funding for her research projects, and other efforts to advance nursing education. Her accomplishments in the dissemination of science include numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, abstracts and proceedings, and presentations at international, national, and regional nursing and scientific conferences.

Teaching, Leadership, and Clinical:

More than 15 years of experience in academia, Dr. Angosta has taught in the graduate and undergraduate nursing programs. She currently teaches in the doctoral program at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) and serves as the Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship. Prior to joining Baylor, she was the director of the graduate program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and post-master’s certificate. During her director role, she was instrumental in elevating the UNLV’s profile making it the #1 graduate nursing school in NV and top 10 online MSN program in the nation. It was during her leadership that the program’s national rankings rose to #7 in the category of online education and from 76th to 40th in the category of Graduate & Professional Programs (U.S. News and World Report, 2021). She was also instrumental in increasing the enrollment of UNLV’s MSN program and establishment of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. Dr. Angosta mentored numerous students and chaired and/or served as a member of doctoral dissertations, DNP projects, and advised MSN students’ thesis and capstones. She also mentored junior faculty by helping them conduct research, publish, and advance their education and professional careers.

A veteran and former military officer of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, Dr. Angosta is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with 23 years’ experience in primary care, internal medicine, acute care, and military medicine. Prior to her advanced practice role, she was a registered nurse/charge nurse in cardiovascular care unit, emergency care, and level 1 trauma.

Honors and Awards:

Dr. Angosta is a distinguished fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She is also a recipient of the Nurse Practitioner Advocate State Award for Excellence from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Committees, Memberships, and Community Service:

Dr. Angosta is a member of the Baylor University Research Integrity Council and Faculty of Color Alliance. She also serves on multiple committees at LHSON, including Chair of the Tenured Faculty Committee. She was instrumental in developing the first D.E.I committee at LHSON. Her professional memberships include American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Academy of Nursing, Asian American Pacific Islander Nurses Association, Southern Nursing Research Society, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, and Sigma Eta Gamma chapter. She is also an active member of St. Ann Parish Church where she serves as a Lector in their Eucharistic Ministry. She loves to travel with her family, listen to classical music, watch documentary films, and explore nature.
